In a historic landslide, New Yorkers have chosen 34-year-old Zohran Mamdani as the city\u2019s next mayor, decisively defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.<\/strong><\/p>\n

With over 97% of the votes counted, Mamdani secured at least 1.03 million votes\u2014 more than all other candidates combined \u2014 making him the first Muslim mayor of New York City and the first of South Asian heritage.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Just a year ago, hardly anyone had heard his name. But now, he\u2019s making history.<\/p>\n

At just 34,\u00a0Zohran Mamdani<\/a>\u00a0has won the New York mayoral race, becoming the city\u2019s youngest mayor in a century and its first Muslim leader.<\/p>\n

London Mayor Sadiq Khan\u00a0praised<\/a>\u00a0the victory as a triumph for optimism, tweeting:<\/p>\n

\u201dNew Yorkers faced a clear choice \u2013 between hope and fear \u2013 and just like we\u2019ve seen in London \u2013 hope won.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201dDonald Trump, since I know you\u2019re watching..\u201d<\/h2>\n

At his election night rally outside the Brooklyn Paramount, Mamdani delivered a message celebrating New York\u2019s identity as a city of immigrants:<\/p>\n

\u201dNew York will remain a city of immigrants, a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants and as of tonight, led by an immigrant.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Mamdani didn\u2019t stop there. He wasted no time calling out President\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>, signaling the fierce political battles ahead. In front of a cheering crowd, he delivered four pointed words directly at the president:<\/p>\n

\u201dDonald Trump, since I know you\u2019re watching, I have four words for you: turn the volume up!\u201d<\/p>\n

Mamdani\u2019s campaign had already positioned him as a counterweight to Trump\u2019s policies, particularly on immigration, and his bold remarks make it clear that he intends to continue the fight from City Hall.<\/p>\n

\u201dIf anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him,\u201d Mamdani told supporters.<\/p>\n

\u201dAnd if there is any way to terrify a despot, it is by dismantling the very conditions that allowed him to accumulate power. This is not only how we stop Trump, it\u2019s how we stop the next one.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201dIf you have a communist running New York\u2026\u201d<\/h2>\n

The city\u2019s Board of Elections reported the largest voter turnout in more than 50 years, with more than two million New Yorkers casting ballots.<\/p>\n

The victory is part of a broader sweep for Democrats in Tuesday\u2019s elections, energizing the party ahead of next year\u2019s congressional contests.<\/p>\n

Mamdani\u2019s win also sets the stage for a high-stakes showdown with Trump, who has already threatened to withhold federal funding if the Democratic socialist takes office.<\/p>\n

\u201dIf you have a communist running New York, all you\u2019re doing is wasting the money you\u2019re sending there,\u201d Trump\u00a0warned<\/a>\u00a0on CBS\u2019 60 Minutes, signaling that Republicans will make Mamdani\u2019s progressive policies a target.<\/p>\n

Still, the mayor-elect is undeterred. While outlining plans to tackle the city\u2019s cost-of-living crisis \u2014 including a proposed rental freeze, universal childcare, and other bold measures \u2014 he made one thing clear:<\/p>\n

\u201dSo hear me, President Trump, when I say this: To get to any of us you will have to go through all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Inside Mamdani\u2019s policies<\/h2>\n

At just 34, Zohran Mamdani has risen rapidly, shaking up New York\u2019s political scene. With his left-leaning, populist message, he has now claimed the most powerful position in the city.<\/p>\n

He emphasizes authenticity, grassroots organizing, and connecting with communities, gaining attention on social media while facing criticism from opponents and President Trump.<\/p>\n

Mamdani\u2019s policies focus on affordability, including freezing rent for rent-stabilized apartments, expanding city-owned grocery stores, and making public transit free.<\/p>\n

He also plans to lower the cost of child care and raise the minimum wage to $30 per hour by 2030.<\/p>\n

To fund these initiatives, he proposes higher taxes on corporations and wealthy residents, though support from state officials is uncertain.
