After all, they\u2019re a fairly common part of growing up, particularly in environments where hundreds, if not thousands of young people are thrown together.<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-content bloghash-entry\">\n<p>Yet though I was witness to my fair share of practical jokes during my school years, I don\u2019t ever remember watching a prank play out that threatened someone\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-b7bff8b50971b703f3bf3902b2d39739\" class=\"newsner-b7bff8b50971b703f3bf3902b2d39739 newsner-bluebillywig_instream\">\n<div id=\"newsner-713979138\" class=\"newsner-bluebillywig_instream\">\n<div id=\"\">\n<div id=\"bb-iawr-newsner_english_playout-1601396675571335\" class=\"bb_iawr\">\n<div id=\"bb-wr-newsner_english_playout-1601396675571335\" class=\"bb-media bb_wrapper bb-muted bb-phase-init bb-mode-video bb-pendingplay\" data-flags=\"{}\" data-softembargoremainingtime=\"0\" data-sid=\"QEddqyyyhHO4\" data-isready=\"true\" data-autoplaynextremainingtime=\"0\">\n<div class=\"bb-layer bb-context-layer\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Call me old-fashioned, but I think there\u2019s a definite, sacrosanct line that shouldn\u2019t be crossed when it comes to pranks that put people in real danger. Like, for example, exposing them to something they\u2019re highly allergic to.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s exactly what happened at Lake Travis High School, Texas, last year, when Carter Mannon\u2019s football teammates decided to sprinkle peanuts in his locker.<\/p>\n<p>Carter\u2019s serious peanut allergy was reportedly diagnosed when he was just nine months old.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had him sitting on the counter, and my husband was making a peanut butter sandwich right next to him. Carter reached his hand inside of the peanut butter jar and he ended up smearing it on himself,\u201d his mom, Shawna Mannon,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/texas-football-players-peanuts-allergic-teammate-locker-school-says-not-bullying-8601499#:~:text=%22It%20was%20a%20can%20of,the%20damage%20had%20been%20done.%E2%80%9D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told<\/a>\u00a0PEOPLE in February 2024.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-179493\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/11\/04095054\/Screenshot-2025-11-04-at-10.50.43.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"484\" height=\"504\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit \/ Mannon Family Handout<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cHe broke out in hives right away \u2013 it was a perfect handprint of hives. And that\u2019s when we realized, \u2018Oh, he must be allergic.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Through exercising caution, the young man has been able to live a normal life, and he was delighted to have made it onto the Lake Travis High School Varsity football team.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-08ac5d1524c70c967c8af0b179c12fc7\" class=\"newsner-08ac5d1524c70c967c8af0b179c12fc7 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>According to Shawna, though, his new teammates \u2013 who were well aware of his peanut allergy \u2013 filled his locker with peanuts.<\/p>\n<p>Carter had already experienced a prior incident at the school when he accidentally ate a contaminated cookie. On that occasion he was forced to take two doses of his EpiPen and travel to the ER.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the severity of her son\u2019s allergy, Shawna revealed: \u201cHis levels are off the chart. You have this big strong kid [and] one little peanut could take him down, could kill him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An EpiPen delivers emergency\u00a0doses of epinephrine\u00a0in cases of severe allergic reactions,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/drg-20072429?p=1#:~:text=Descriptions,substances%20or%20triggered%20by%20exercise.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">per the Mayo Clinic.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnaphylaxis needs to be treated right away with an injection of epinephrine,\u201d they write. \u201cIf it isn\u2019t treated right away, it can be deadly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter accidentally eating a contaminated cookie was a worrying reminder of his vulnerability. What his teammates allegedly did, however, is something else entirely.<\/p>\n<p>Shawna explained: \u201cThey were kind of joking around about it and they said, \u2018But could it kill you if it touched you?\u2019 And he says, \u2018Yeah, it absolutely could.\u2019 If it got in his nose, eyes, or mouth, that\u2019s where it would go into anaphylactic shock. And so he told them, \u2018Yes, it could absolutely kill me.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen, the next day before the game, they went in and they had put peanuts in his locker, on his jersey, and in his cleats.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-1151502179\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-18e8bb21f37422e23d02eb76bbe4e10f\" class=\"newsner-18e8bb21f37422e23d02eb76bbe4e10f newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt was a can of peanuts that they just kind of scattered throughout his locker and put in his cleats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter experienced an immediate reaction, developing hives on his arm. Incredibly, the boys involved in pulling the prank faced no discipline outside of being benched for two days, being forced to switch locker rooms, and doing extra runs at practise.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Shawna claims Carter faced backlash.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a lot of verbal retaliation\u2026,\u201d she said. \u201cThere was one point where someone in the locker room put a peanut butter granola bar in his backpack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The concerned mom went to the school board to report the peanut incident. She was then told that it did not qualify as bullying.<\/p>\n<p>A Lake Travis Independent School District representative explained to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/texas-football-players-peanuts-allergic-teammate-locker-school-says-not-bullying-8601499#:~:text=%22It%20was%20a%20can%20of,the%20damage%20had%20been%20done.%E2%80%9D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">PEOPLE<\/a>: \u201cUnder the Texas Education Code, bullying is a very specific behavior, and is defined as an act or pattern of acts that physically harms a student or materially and substantially disrupts the educational process. Upon concluding our investigation, it was determined that the legal elements of bullying were not met.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter eventually moved schools.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What would you do if your child was subjected to something like this?
