The Glasgow smile is one such torture method.<\/p>\n<p>Inflicted by cutting from one or both corners of the victim\u2019s mouth, sometimes all the way to the ears, the so-called Glasgow smile originated in a dark period in the Scottish city of the same name. The new working class crowded into tenements plagued with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/history\/scottishhistory\/modern\/intro_modern2.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disease, malnutrition, and poverty,<\/a>\u00a0a classic recipe for violent crime and desperation.<\/p>\n<p>The end of World War I only compounded these problems. The scars indicated any Glaswegian who\u2019d incurred the wrath of one of the city\u2019s many gangs.<\/p>\n<p>Desperate to suppress Glasgow\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20120425145831\/http:\/\/www.ourglasgowstory.com\/story.php?sid=449\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">growing reputation<\/a>\u00a0as a violent criminal underworld, city elders recruited Percy Sillitoe, a veteran policeman of the United Kingdom, to combat the gangs. He succeeded and closed the 1930s with the various gangs broken up and their leaders in jail. Indeed, politicians and murder victims alike were subject to the torturous act.<\/p>\n<p>One such example was William Joyce, a.k.a. Lord Haw-Haw. Despite his nickname, Lord-Haw-Haw was no aristocrat. Rather, he was born in Brooklyn, New York, and was the son of poor Irish Catholics. He later stumbled into the shadows of the Irish War of Independence before drifting over to England. There, he discovered a rabid passion for fascism and became a steward for the British Fascists.<\/p>\n<p>One of the British Fascists\u2019 favorite activities was to act as a security force for Conservative Party politicians, and this is what Joyce was doing on the evening of Oct. 22, 1924, in Lambeth, London. As he stood watch, an unknown attacker leaped at him from behind, striking him on the face before disappearing.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pbh-lazy-inline pbh_inline\" data-loader=\"revLoader\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1766402468223-3\" data-google-query-id=\"CKTf8YGK0ZEDFSSYgwgdiW0dwg\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/1017773\/ATIInline_4__container__\"><iframe id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/1017773\/ATIInline_4\" tabindex=\"0\" title=\"3rd party ad content\" name=\"google_ads_iframe_\/1017773\/ATIInline_4\" width=\"300\" height=\"50\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" aria-label=\"Advertisement\" data-load-complete=\"true\" data-google-container-id=\"8\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Joyce was left with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.historic-uk.com\/HistoryUK\/HistoryofBritain\/Lord-Haw-Haw-William-Joyce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disturbingly deep and long gash<\/a>\u00a0along the right side of his face that would, ultimately, heal into a Glasgow smile.<\/p>\n<p>Joyce would then go on to hold a prominent position in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/allthatsinteresting.com\/oswald-mosley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oswald Mosley\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0British Union of Fascists, which espoused Nazism leading up to World War II. In 1934, serial killer and so-called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/allthatsinteresting.com\/albert-fish\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brooklyn Vampire Albert Fish<\/a>\u2018s reign of terror ended in New York City. The seemingly-mild-mannered man had a grisly habit of molesting, torturing, and eating children \u2014 as well as branding one with a Glasgow smile.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pbh-lazy-inline pbh_inline\" data-loader=\"revLoader\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1766402468223-4\" data-google-query-id=\"CJ6nk4KK0ZEDFTXXZQMd_vIrbQ\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/1017773\/ATIInline_5__container__\"><iframe id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/1017773\/ATIInline_5\" tabindex=\"0\" title=\"3rd party ad content\" name=\"google_ads_iframe_\/1017773\/ATIInline_5\" width=\"320\" height=\"50\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" aria-label=\"Advertisement\" data-load-complete=\"true\" data-google-container-id=\"9\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Fish first murdered and ate 10-year-old Grace Budd, and the investigation into her disappearance led to more morbid victims of his. Billy Gaffney, for instance, was Fish\u2019s next unfortunate victim. In February 1927, the four-year old boy failed to return home. Eventually, suspicion fell on Fish who gleefully confirmed that, among other heinous actions, he had \u201ccut off his [Gaffney\u2019s] ears \u2013 nose \u2013 slit his mouth from ear to ear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although Fish would stand trial for the murder of Grace Budd in 1935, Gaffney\u2019s family would never receive even the small comfort of having a body to bury.
