The relatives divided the house without rushing, but with clear calculation. Who would get the land, who would take the house, and who would benefit from future profits. When it was the granddaughter’s turn, the notary calmly announced that Lina would inherit an old feather mattress from the attic.
An awkward silence filled the office. The uncle smirked, the aunt looked away. Someone suggested throwing the mattress out immediately and buying Lina something more useful instead. But Lina refused. She took the mattress home.
Her workshop was small and always smelled the same: old wood, wax, dust, and cold coffee. Chairs and dressers stood there, waiting to be restored on order. Money was scarce, and so was work. The mattress almost completely covered the floor and quickly became an obstacle, but Lina thought she could at least use its stuffing for furniture repairs.
The mattress was heavy, dirty, and worn out. The fabric had thinned over the years, and everything inside was compressed. Lina carefully cut through the seams, layer by layer, trying not to inhale the dust. Suddenly, the knife hit something hard. It didn’t feel like a spring or wood.
She pushed the stuffing aside and froze. Inside was something unusual, carefully wrapped and clearly placed there on purpose. Lina’s heart began to race — she immediately understood this was no coincidence.
A chill ran through her at what she discovered.
Carefully, she moved more stuffing aside and found additional compact bundles. They were neatly folded and placed inside identical blue envelopes, clean and sturdy, as if prepared with intention.
The envelopes were evenly distributed between the layers of the mattress, making it look completely ordinary from the outside and raising no suspicion.
LINA TOOK THEM OUT ONE BY ONE AND PLACED THEM ON THE FLOOR. EACH ENVELOPE CONTAINED MONEY. OLD BANKNOTES, NEATLY FOLDED AND HELD WITH RUBBER BANDS, NO MESS, NO HASTE. IT WAS CLEAR THE MONEY HAD NOT BEEN COLLECTED ALL AT ONCE, BUT HIDDEN CAREFULLY OVER TIME. Slowly, Lina sank down onto the floor and looked around, barely able to believe what was happening.
While the relatives argued over the house, the land’s value, and future profits, the most valuable thing had been lying in the attic all along, hidden in an old mattress no one even wanted to touch.
Now it was clear why her grandmother had kept the mattress until the very end and never allowed anyone to throw it away. And why Lina had inherited it. From the outside, it looked like a useless object, but inside it held a reserve for hard times.
